Bikepacking The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

Jersey Shore, PA

August 12, 2023 – August 13, 2023 (1 nights)

$20 Per Person

COMPLETED

We will bikepack and camp in the deepest gorge of the Keystone State. The surface is 30% paved, 70% gravel. We will spend one night in a tent. The route is 118 miles, with 6500 ft. of climbing.

Here is how the route developer described it: Pine Creek Gorge is a massive canyon carved on the Allegheny Plateau by the Pine Creek. The gorge is 1450 ft (440 m) deep and 4000 ft wide, which gave it the title of “The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.” The Pine Creek Rail Trail traverses most of the Gorge.

This route travels on most of the rail trail, but also takes two big detours to reach both the Western and Eastern rim of the Canyon. Climbing is still relatively contained as about half of the route is on the rail trail; the rest being mostly on seldom traveled gravel or back roads. The views are spectacular; the one at Colton Point State Park is not to be missed. Another really beautiful area is Little Pine State Park. And yet another great view from Barbour Rock. This is relatively easy bikepacking, ideal for a first-time bikepacker, but you should be comfortable with the distances/elevations on a loaded bike. There are two major climbs, along with flat stretches.

See more information about the canyon HERE and about the routes HERE.

Any gravel or touring bike will do. Start and end in Jersey Shore, PA. (yes, that is the name of the town).

Rain date August 26-27th.

Campsite facilities include port-a-john, water, and picnic tables.
